Adult Classes

Riverside’s Education Program embraces life-long learning in classes, productions, discussions, and seminars.  Whether through courses in the areas of acting and dance or in discussion groups, lectures, and seminars exploring areas of theatre through the study of specific plays, playwrights, and production choices here at Riverside Theatre – adults can find opportunities for ongoing and life-long education while connecting to the artists and artistic expressions at a professional theatre.  Here at Riverside, adults have the chance to study and build on their skills as a performer or gather together and simply celebrate their appreciation for the art of theatre and all its many forms.

This class is open for all adults who may have dabbled in acting, wish to study acting further, or simply have an appreciation for acting onstage.  Using various group activities, theatre games, improvisation, and scene work, students will gain an understanding of the actor’s process and a confidence in themselves as story-tellers.  Participants will learn about exploring a character, analyzing a text, and working within an ensemble while applying such work to monologues and scenes.

Have you ever seen a fight onstage and wondered “how did they do that?” Come learn the tricks and techniques that will leave audiences speechless and the safety factors that will let do perform again and again.  This class will serve as an introduction to stage combat for the actor. The content of the class will include basic training exercises for the safe execution of unarmed theatrical violence with a strong emphasis on “acting the fight”.

Beginning Ballet

Students in this level will be introduced to classical ballet technique.  Basic barre exercises will be taught and structured work away from barre will begin. Ask about our monthly Dance Payment Plans!

Intermediate/Advanced Ballet

Love theatre? Want to learn more about the shows being produced at Riverside Theatre? BACKSTAGE ACCESS gives you the key to behind-the-scenes information and discussions of our main stage productions. This series of adult courses will take a closer look at the professional productions being presented by Riverside Theatre while also exploring theatre as an art form and celebrating the magical relationship that exists between actors and audience within a shared space and time.  By examining a specific play on the Riverside calendar, studying its past production history, and learning about Riverside’s production through visits from guest artists and design displays, class members will discuss each play, be introduced to various production elements, and, ultimately, analyze the choices made here at Riverside after attending a performance. Part lecture, part seminar, part participation, and part discussion, the Backstage Access classes seek to build a greater awareness of the many facets and collaborations involved in theatrical expression as we continue to explore the questions “Why theatre?” and “What makes the live theatrical event different from all other art forms?”
